I'm a big fan of using nature as source of inspiration in aquascaping. So with this in mind here's half a dozen photos I took on my recent trip to Snowdonia in Wales.

A beautiful part of the world I'm sure you'll agree and yet more excuses for me to invest in a decent camera. These were taken with a £75 Olympus 5MP compact.

I hope you find these of some interest.

You'd think humans had never existed looking at those photos.

I've been there too, being Welsh and Scottish mix.
Looks like Scotland a lot as well.

We have similar grassy hill sides in CA along the coast and upper regions.

I tend to forget how beautiful nature is as I'm surrounded by concrete, steel and glass most of the time.

I guess that is another appealing aspect to having a well-aquascaped planted aquarium. To bring us closer to nature.

Nie shots George, I especially like the 2nd shot and the one with the stones coming out of the water! Maybe you should use these types of photos to help you position your rocks instead! lol

I just got back from Horsetail falls in Desolation wilderness today.

I'll start a new thread for this, but I found a herbacerous and a liverwort to try out.

I took a lot of photo's of real natural bonsai, some hundred's of years old.
The area might look a lot like Yosemite and it's dramatic, but not at the same level, it's only 1.5 hour drive from my place in Davis.

If anyone is visiting out here sometime, they are welcomed to check it out, it's pretty easy to find.

George, are you going to collect some rocks etc from there?

I didn't collect anything except photos and memories!

TBH I didn't see any stones worth picking up believe it or not. But then, as GMF will tell you, I don't have an eye for these things (yet!).

BTW have you seen Moody's new nanoscape on TFF? Now there are some nice stones and composition.

Small tanks are hard to work with, I end up using the stones and then go about finding a tank to fit them in.

I think you got the eye george-- you just haven't played with enough materials yet! Play more! It's just cause you had that 1 30g for a long time.

you need the rocks and the wood and thwe tnaks, then you can go ahead.

Amano got good by doing many many tanks, not some inherent thing, it takes practice and an eye for it later.

Moody's little nano does good.
I did similar things but with a piece of wood and okho rock.
Here needs to get more plants in there for now and maintaining such small tanks are hard, evaporation is huge issue.
So is maintaining CO2 at levels that do not kill fish.

I hope not.

I'm Scottish and in Scotland the reason why we have lots of bare hills is because the Lairds took it upon themselves to chop down all the trees and forcibly kicked out thousands of people from their homes and used the land to raise sheep.

There is nothing 'natural' about lots of Scottish countryside.

A few years ago, there started a project to replant the forests. It'll take a hundred years. But the hills of Scotland will look very different.
