I am looking out changing out my soilmaster select for some black sand (Black Beauty). The SMS is okay it is just frustrating to plant in because its so light and if plant growth isn't covering the Red of the SMS it is quite ugly in my opinion. Plus I have some algae from trying to dial in my CO2 that I need to remove so it would be a dual purpose tear down.

I will be using the same driftwood, filter, plants (Albeit trimmed way down) water and everything else. Will this cause a cycle and do you think it could pose a problem for my fish?

Should be fine, just do extra water changes for 3-4 weeks, say 2x a week.....that should get you through pretty well.
