Why my Rotala doesn't grow up to the surface anymore?

    Hello,
My Rotala used to grow straight up to the surface, but now, after several trimmings, it grows up just for a few millimeters, and then grows horizontally. Any ideas?

Here is a picture of my Rotala in the center. As you can see there are between 1-2 inches between the stems and the water surface that my Rotala no longer cover:

    Thoughts?

Maybe cut the tops and replant and see what happens.

    Too little light maybe?

    Strange indeed.

The one I have here needs to be trimmed heavy every other week.

Hope more will chime in soon.

I have tried that, but doesn't seem to help. One of the stems, once replanted, kept moving horizontally and put out new side stems that finally grew vertically to the light! See it in the picture below:

I hope you can see what I mean...

Light should be ok, no change.... Unless bulbs have lost power suddenly!

    Don't you have HARDER KH's?
The roots might be rotting, and need a trim etc.
Other plants are also growing better now, so more of the CO2 is being used up faster.

Try placing some of the Rotala in the CO2 outflow, so it gets hit with CO2 rich water.

Thank you Tom, yes I think you are right, some of the roots look actually rotten. I'd probably need to cut and trash much part of that plant. Co2 shouldn't be a problem, the get a fair amount of co2 from one of the outflows just a couple of inches in front of them. It is just the fact that they grow up a little, and then they go horizontally that puzzles me... Unless I trimmed them too much and that's the result. I could try to cut the top, good parts, and root them in place of the old stems that I have trimmed probably one hundred times...what do you think?

You have plenty of stem tops to play with.

After topping so many times, the lower part gets a bit ratty.

So a good trim, better CO2, good KH's etc, they recover and then you start again.

Yes, I think you are right and that's exactly my case. I will try to trim a big deal and post the results. Thank you!
