Where to count bubbles?

The bubble rate is much higher in my bubble counter than the bubble rate in the glass co2 diffuser just before the bubbles hit the pocket of air (co2) below the ceramic disk. Would it be more accurate to gauge using the bubble rate in the diffuser?

I would think that the bubble rate should be the same in both places, but since it is not, I am assuming a leak somewhere between the bubble counter and the diffuser.

Not all bubbles are created equal. Consider the size of the tubing, for example. Also, how much CO2 is actually in a bubble? It's not really a scientific method, more of a convenience or reference point. I'll let others more experience than myself comment further.

I would say that the "bubble count" is relevant to your tank. Like was mentioned, not all bubbles are equal. The important thing is a place to judge the rate. You then can observe growth or a drop checker to judge if the rate is enough for your tank. If not you can use your current bubble count to increase the rate. Its really a reference for you. Saying that 3 bps is standard isn't quite accurate, some may be using other diffusion methods, have smaller/larger bubbles, etc.

So use whatever is easiest to count and adjust...

I'm actually not even using a bubble counter anymore. I just let the tank and my drop checker let me know what's going on.

Maybe I should rephrase - why would the bubble count be different in the two different places?
