What do Plants do at night?

Mr. Barr,
While I have a rather vague clue of plant respiration and their use of 02 at night when the photosynthesis motor isn't running, it's not clear to me how they actually implement basic functions with lights out. Presumably they still process nutrients via some other chemistry, or do they? For example why do they not suffer as much as the BGA when a three day blackout is implemented to eradicate it?

Would you consider posting a "Plant Night Life for Dummies" article? Would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Re: What do Plants do at night?

People and plants do the same thing at night, respire.

They produce far more than they need to respire during the day, but everything respires. Plants just produce their own food.

They will take in some nutrients at night, but they make starch for use later during the day and also use some of the products they nmake to respire.

Plants are very effieicent compared to critters in terms of respiration.

Regards,
Tom Barr

Hello all...

I am wondering what if anything would change if one of these mega popular "moon lights" were used on a planted tank. Would it interupt the plants natural night process? What if one were added to an established tank?

Many of us use them on established tanks with no visible bad effects. I don't think 1 watt is enough to stimulate or interrupt any chemical reactions.

i actually had to stop using the moonlights i built for my planted tank cause it just aggravated my thread algae problem :(
