I've heard this term around the traps, and was wondering whether someone could explain what water polishing is? I use an Eheim 2213 with the average media + sponges. What would I need to add to improve my water clarity from here?

It just means getting micro particles out of the water. The human eye can detect things down to about 30 microns.

You can try adding some fine filter pads or even some micron rated filter pads to your eheim. The bigger online supply houses sell it.
It will clog your filter faster is the trade off.

Get some 50 or 100 micron cloth. Its pretty cheap in bulk.

    For example: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=03F-000Z-00005

Run your filtration through it, but make sure it can be bypassed when its clogged.

You don't have to run 100% of the water through it.

If your Eheim would use a 5 inch diamter filter pad, them make a 4 inch circle so the water can get around it.

I wrap it around the face, top and bottom of my filter sponge in the sump and let the water get out through the sides.

I can rinse it out under hot water 1 or 2 times before discarding and replacing.
