Hey fishheads. I finally started my 75g. I dry started it about 6 weeks ago and the MC is doing well.

I have an Eheim G160 (330 GPH) with glass lilly pipes that I think look clean, but doesn't seem to be moving water that well and definitely not much surface agitation. Some plants slightly move with the water flow and there is a barely noticeable ripple on the top close to the outlet pipe. There is a spiraling funnel effect from the outlet pipe which looks cool, but is that enough breakage in the surface water? Am I better off adding (which takes away from my clean look) a powerhead on the opposite side of the tank from the outlet pipe (I would place it above my CO2 diffuser pointing back to the outlet pipe aiming up to create surface agitation and water current, OR, do I replace the outlet pipe with the original spray bar that came with it and place it on top facing it the same way as the currently place outlet pipe.

I put a Marineland Deluxe 350 on my 29G tall with a spray bar and the water flow and surface agitation is so much better than that Eclipse II hood/filter that came with it. I have great water movement and the surface water is clean. That is what I thought I was going for with my new tank.

Any suggestions or opinions are appreciated.

    Thanks!

Hi catchnrelease, I would say with a rated flow rate of 330 gph you could use more flow. Recommended turnover rates for planted tanks are usually around 10x +/- 2.

Typical ADA filter flow setup is lily pipe outflow and intake on one side of tank with co2 diffuser on other. The idea is flow exits the outflow. Travels across top of water column hitting opposite wall. Travels down glass while pushing Co2 bubbles towards substrate. Then returning across substrate while supplying ground cover with Co2 and picking up debris to return to inflow pipe.

With that said I would probably place power head somewhere on same side as outflow. Hydor Koralia Nano not to obtrusive. 3.5 x 2 x 2 inches.

You just want a nice ripple across the whole surface. No breaking water or waves.

So I bought a Nano 545 and placed it above my CO2 diffuser. I tried placing it on the same side as the outflow pipes, but it didn't move surface water at the other end any better. Now I am gettting the CO2 distributed better across the tank and the surface water is clean and has good movement. The water flow is gently moving all my plants throughout the tank. Thank you for your advice.
