Unknown eel like occupant?

I have been looking a little closer at my tank in the last 2 days as I think my Gold Melon Discus have spawned. I can't confirm it as that part of my tank is thick with plants but no one is allowed back there but the two "parents". Anyway I noticed a small eel like creature about two inches long come up from the bottom of the tank and coil up in the stargrass near the surface. I tried to net him but he got away. Any idea what I saw? I only have 4 Discus in this tank and nothing else so it either came in the Eco Complete or the Plants.

No this looked like an eel. I did not see an eye or face but definitely an eel like tail and dark color no markings. I was mainly worried that it some kind of parasite.

Check this link out http://www.fishpalace.org/Disease.html and scroll down to the pictures of Anchor Worms ... look at the worm pictures, especially the fifth one on the right that shows a worm next to a ruler ...

Most of us with Discus like to feed our Discus lots of exotic foods ... and worms are a very common side effect or consequence ... and worms are parasites that we do have to take seriously ...

Here's a good page with all kinds of medications that often become commonly known to discus fanciers http://www.rockymountaindiscus.com/Food_and_medications.htm

Re: Unknown eel like occupant?

Thanks Greg. No I do not believe that is it. I think these "eels" are living in the substrate and only come out on occasion. I netted one when I first set up my tank and had no fish only plants. It was only around an inch and I was thinking that was what a fluke looked like. I have a disease book now and that is no fluke I saw. My 4 Discus are fine btw. I was just curious as so far no problems from these "eels". They don't exactly make me look forward to trimming and rearanging my tank though. Maybe my substrate came from Loch Ness.
