    Hello folks,
Here is a question for you: I moved into EI about 2 months ago, and now I see a lot of diatoms build up inside my sump, mostly inside my sump first chamber (where the tank outflow is coming). I setup this tank 5 years ago, and this never happened before. Is that normal with EI?

Do you have any silicates in your tank/sump?

Just do water changes every other day, and use some micron pads in your sump to help collect. Clean it very well. They will go away in time. Takes a few weeks, so don't do anything drastic!

do you have light in your sump? If not, that's not algae.

No, I have not lights the sump is in the dark inside the tank cabinet. If not algae, what's that brown film that really looks like diatom?

That's not diatoms. It's the nitrifying bacteria and archaea.

I never had that stuff before moving into EI... But I have also increased the water flow into the sump at the same time. So, if they are bacteria, is that a good sign? Do you have the same "stuff" in your sumps as well?

The increased flow will definitely increase the microbe colonies. I don't have a sump but I have it in the filter inlet and outlet pipes and tubes. It should also be colonizing your bio-media. Yes, it's a good sign.

That sounds good then! I was really worried about it and was trying to find a way to get rid of it!

Thank you for your help, appreciated.

Do you run just a sump?

    any other filtration in there?

I do notice only when using CO 2 a brown stuff all over my filters I use canister types.

Always been that way I say the CO2 adds to it, but hey plants are okay.

So how the plants doing Fab?

    Good we hope.

    Jeff

Hi Jeff! I have just a sump for my 75gl tank. Glad to know you have the same brown stuff I have now.

Plants are doing good, Ambulias are getting better, but I am still struggling with Rotalas and Alternantheras. I will probably post a new thread about those plants soon.

    Thanks!

    Fab.
