Toms gone... who's running things?

The title says it all. I'm presuming the forum hasn't been left to be mauled by the spam bots, and I have yet to see anyone with a mod/admin title. Who's taking care of the forum until Tom gets back?

Tom isn't involved with the technical details of running this site. That is the job of the site administrator.

Supposedly he or she can be reached at "Contact Us" at the bottom of the page. i say "supposedly" because I haven't got a reply to my latest 'contact."

If the administrator is monitoring this, perhaps he or she would like to comment.

Hi,

There are several mods that keep an eye out I think. I think Greg and some others.. Much too much for one person IMO.

I think the site is pretty much stable as such unless a server is down or maintenance is underway and there is software that automatically detects some spam, but some always gets thru.

I am not sure, but I think the mods are move involved with threads or replies, or user issues and the like.

Philosophos, why would linking to the Barr home page be an issue :)

There is no need to draw them out with bait. Like the government, always around LOL

Bill, did you have an issue with the actual site or is it an issue with a thread, reply, or user. Please PM me if you want....

Hi, Gerry.

My problem is that I haven't been getting emails in response to postings to sites to which I have subscribed.

I'm probably doing something wrong, but my email address is correct and the option is set to "Instant email notification", so . . . ?

Thanks for your interest.

I didn't link to the barr report; I used a bunch of spam filter words and a link for free viagra, and it got changed to that later. It seems someone... or something... is watching

How strange.......maybe the mods can investigate this new issue as well where thread verbiage is replaced......hmmmmmm

I have been around IT for 20 years and seen all sorts of strange things with computers :D

Just great, Tom takes off for a day and the forum is starting to gain sentience. How are we going to explain this when he gets back? If this thing starts to be able to pass the turing test, we're all screwed.

Yes....something (the software) is watching.

There is software which can automatically link back to the homepage on basis of certain links or links that contain specific words.

Regards,
Dutchy.

All is ok, Tom is safe in the land downunder, he's speaking at the ANGFA conference in Sydney. Went to dinner with he & Dianna Walsted tonight. Looking forward to his talk tomorrow. :)

Hi all,

I e-mailed Greg today and he states that the e-mails are being generated from the site. He states he gets all his notifications at least :)

He mentions to check your spam and e-mail filters at the PC, e-mail provider, and ISP levels to ensure no blockage of this site.

Or to 'whitelist' this site so it is accepted.

I subscribed myself to 3 threads today and they didn't seem to be working. I checked all of my settings as Greg suggested and all seemed okay. User CP was checked, e-mail addy, etc.

I just now received an e-mail from one of the subscribed threads.

The reply was from SOMEONE ELSE, so maybe your own posts/replies do not generate one?

I did NOT change anything that I am aware of.

I see that the timestamp of the e-mail matches that of the thread reply, so it seems to work okay.

Why don't we all subscribe to THIS thread, let me know when you are, and I will post a reply and see if we get it or not.

I am subscribed to it.

I know there are several methods to subscribe to a thread. Perhaps only 1 or more actually work? I will check this out and subscribe to a different thread each way.

Let me know.

Hi,

Gerry, I just received a notification of your last post, and I have received a few others.

I'll watch closely for other notifications.

I havent had any problems with notifications on any subscribed threads. Remember it will only send one notification, even though there may be more than one reply. You have to visit the site to reset the notification. So if your not getting any notifications I would check your cookie settings.

Greg informed me as to a new software set up we are coming on line with.
This would cost a pretty penny if it where not for some special deals Greg has been involved in and been extremely generous with.

So this web site really benefits greatly as much from myself as it does from Greg, if not more so. He puts more effort into this than many realize/see.

Because of his other interest, business, we all benefit.
Likewise the same is true here for me, I work with aquatic plants at a different level than most hobbyists.

This web site is not driven to be a happy social club really, I'm not looking for high poster volume at all, nor vendors, their belly aching whining, one upping each other drama......... that makes it much simpler, but more costly(no $ coming in). But the small amount of $ coming from that is hardly worth it time wise for myself or Greg, we got bigger fish to fry.

So this makes things simpler, lower volume and much easier to manage.
However, the google ratings and the wide dispersal of the web site suggest it's on par with most forums, but with only 5% of the work load.

Must be doing something right.

Regards,
Tom Barr
