Do you use a UV sterilizer? Do you run it 24/7 or only in particular instances for a period of time? Why?

I've seen this debate come up a few times. I purchased one when I decided to go for a full planted tank, but removed it later. I've pulled it out a couple times to deal with green water, but not much else. My approach has been avoid getting it in your tank and then you don't have to sterilize it. Proper precautions reduce the necessity if not eliminate the need for a UV sterilizer.

I thought you could provide some insight, Tom (or others).

    Thanks.

The only time I've used a UV filter is when I have a bacterial bloom which I haven't had in a long time.

    I'm no expert though.
