Tank size?

Tom, & all...

I have a question to pose for you. My wife has been on my last nerve, & maybe bordering on insane. So what I have decided to do is to try a new way of planting. My wife is about 5'2", & around 150lbs or so... (she is on a diet, but still has some chubb from our 3 kids) Now, keeping in mind her dimensions, I need your suggestions on how much substrate it would require, & what size tank it would to put her in. I think I could offset the cost of expensive pre fertilized SS & just get some cheapo small gravel to cover her up... I could also go light on fish, & plant VERY heavily to soak up the excess nitrates.

Discuss!

:p

It'd take a bigger tank...

I personally like the 180 gallon aquarium ... I refer to mine as the glass coffin ... its 24 inches deep front to back, 24 inches tall, and 72 inches long ... just about a perfect size ...

Sweet, Greg really is a good man! Not only does he do the community a service, but he will let me hide a body in his big tank!!!

Re: Tank size?

How dare you waste a planted tank on an insane spouse.
They cause algae blooms and cause all sort of havoc.

Oddly and ironically, one complained about my "hobby wasting my time", yet today I make 4x what she does doing my hobby and my passion. She is doing something that is unfulling and never will acheive what I have. I'd say life is fair.

This is certainly not a guy gal thing either. Plenty of gals keep plants and nag about the men too:)
Certainly a two way street.

We are very much the same, even the gays folks have their roles as do mom and dad for kids and older/younger siblings etc.

So it happened to you too. My wife calls me insane but I know better. If you don't believe me, just ask the apple tree in my back yard.

Greg, isn't it kind of dangerous laying on top of the tank eating all that
ice cream? Just curious, you ought to throw your empties away, so it
doesn't look so cluttered :D

Just trying to help,

Re: Tank size?

This is perhaps the best and funniest thread I've read. :D

I too have a wife that is not such a fan of my hobby. She is improving though. She showed she was at least supportive by buying me my new tank for Christmas, and she even pretends to be interested once in a while.....she is a bad actress though...

Re: Tank size?

I guess I'm lucky.

My wife loves the look of nice planted tanks and is pestering me to install another one or two.

She has no clue about the details behind it and doesn't want to know. She just loves to watch them!

I guess I am lucky ... my wife loves the hobby ... she keeps taking over my aquariums one by one ... years ago I had two aquariums ... a 35 gallon and a 55 gallon ...

One day she announced that she was going to put Cichlids in "her" aquarium ... now you have to understand, that "her" aquarium was my 35 gallon passive community fish tank ... this is where you just nod, smile, quietly move the fish you care about into the 55 gallon tank and head off to the pet store ...

We come home with Convict Cichlids ...

Everyone knows what happens next ... the Convicts breed and in my wife's enthusiasm, she doesn't even notice that all of the rest of the fish have quietly disappeared ... there isn't even a floating carcus left behind

Of course ... after the second or third brood ... there is no such thing as room for any more Cichlids in my "wife's" aquarium ...

But ...one day ... some new Cichlids come home ... and the old Cichlids beat the new ones up ... and the new ones are near death ...

Guess where the new near dead ones go? Yep ... into my already crowded 55 gallon tank full of nice passive community fish ...

The new hospital tank exists in this condition for about a year ... and slowly, anything remotely passive in the tank quietly disappears ... and eventually the wife unit starts to describe the 55 gallon tank as "hers" ...

So at this point in time ... I no longer have any aquariums ...

Off we go to a fish club auction ... my wife finds some beautiful ...

neolamp!@$#@%@ cichlids ...

which were described as a breeding trio ... I try to tell my wife that these are juveniles and probably are not a true breeding trio ...

I buy some nice passive community fish to put in the aquarium out in the hotel lobby ...

The "breeding trio" comes up for bid ... my wife buys them ... and we stop at Walmart on the way home to buy a new 29 gallon setup because its the only place open this late at night ...

We have now gone from a household where I had two beautiful community tanks to a household where my wife has three Cichlid tanks ...

A year or so later ... we run into an old "fish" friend of mine and I tell this story ... and in a moment of guilt, my wife realizes what has happened ... and makes the mistake of telling me I can go buy whatever aquarium I want ...

You can believe I kept my mouth shut, kept real quiet, asked a few questions on the APD digest list, and promptly ordered a 180 gallon aquarium for my office before she could change her mind!!!!

Re: Tank size?

Well, for my part, I bought my wife a 'fish' tank for Christmas, thinking it would be no problem, cos I kept Malawis many moons ago..... tnen I read one of Takashi Amano's books and my wprd, what a world of confusion, bad shop advice and algae.... I'm persevering though, asking questions...as Greg knows...

But it's me doing all the water changes and getting the 'there's lots of algae in there and the fish don't look too happy' into the bargain....

;)

Re: Tank size?

My personal approach is reverse psych.
I keep them as far as I can away from it, never take them to a LFS or meeting. Eventually they get curious...........
Then like Greg, they move in..................
If not, then that's okay as well.

They are not bothered either way.

Where? Here in this thread? That's a live link to my webcam ... it updates the picture about every 15 minutes during the day ... 365 days a year ... It's actually the picture on the front page of my website ... you get to see my tank on its good days and its bad days ... no "pristine" carefully timed and manicured show pictures from me !!!! Just the real thing!!

And today, it looks like the last picture my webcam took for the day apparently caught me in the field of view ...

Re: Tank size?

Greg, that's cool! You might put your site on the links page for "Sources for
Fertilizer" --there's none posted, plenty of room :D In the interest of completeness, not redundancy..... :)

Greg

P.S. ... I've got a private question to ask you and Wolfen ... will probably email both of you sometime this weekend ...

Sung to a WestSide Story theme ...

Something's Coming:

Could be, who knows? There's something due any day.
I will know right away, soon as it shows.
It may come cannonballin' down through the sky, gleam in its eye, bright as a rose!
Who knows? It's only just out of reach, down the block, on a beach, under a tree.
I got a feeling there's a miracle due, gonna come true, coming to me.
Could it be? Yes it could, something's coming, something good.
If I can wait, something's coming, I don't know what it is, but it is gonna be great...
