splitting a plant

Can anyone tell me how to split a Nymphaea stellata its getting a bit big now and I want to chop it in two if possible, any ideas?

It briefly mentions that you can separate an adult plant from the bulb ... "3. Easy to propagate by removing adult plants from the bulb and replanting each separately."

Sorry, found out its actually a Nymphaea Maculata not a Nymphaea stellata, its not a bulb plant.
I haver a book now and it says propagation is with shoots from a tuber, all I seem to have growing is loads of leaves and nothing else, growing very well though :)

Do you have a Tuber? Large Tubers can often just be divided ... healthy tubers can also be "nicked" with a razor blade and over time, a new tuber will grow from the nick ...
