So Different, Yet Just Alike

Since spring I've been taking a break of sorts from the hobby. I left my tanks dry, but let the plants do their thing and moved on to other hobbies for the time being. Now that fall is around the corner I'm ready to start getting back into the swing of things. My problem is one tank did far better than the other. The HC in my 55 thrived, and did so to the point it's entirely too much for me to work with, hence the sales thread. The HC and Stauro in my 20 high, on the other hand, has remained stagnant or died off. Both tanks have the same parameters. Type of light fixture/bulbs, substrate, distance of lights from substrate, humidity, manner in which the cling wrap was applied, etc. are all the same. The only difference between these two tanks is the 20 high is about 9 feet higher than the 55, as it's in my bedroom upstairs. Due to this the temperature is about 6-7 degrees higher in the 20 (Colorado doesn't believe in AC units in their houses ).

My question is what exactly would cause two tanks to perform so differently when they're so similar? Thanks for any help.

20 Gallon (Note: The brown areas are dead/dying HC, whereas the green mush is dead Stauro. Black spots are something random that grew on my rocks.)

That could be a tip point for temp.
You might allow the 20 to dry out more also.

I was afraid the temperature would be the issue. It's crazy how less than 10 degrees could seemingly make that much of a difference. The tank isn't nearly as wet as it looks, I actually left the top open for about 20-30 minutes a few weeks back to dry out, then gave it a light spray and haven't touched it since. I'll probably scrape off the very top layer of the substrate before I flood just to get that crap out. Thanks for the help.

HC grows fine in moist soil outside in CA where it's dry and hot.

So it does not need to be so humid, fungus and poor root growth can happen.
