This collection just gets sweeter and sweeter!

Saw you mention on TPT having the "True Mato Grosso." How do you tell the difference between the true variety, and what is commonly sold as mato grosso, which apparently isnt the true variety?

I have some of the latter (I think), just wondering how to tell the difference. Also do you know the proper name for the faux variety?

The one that came from joraan passed to me passed to burr & pikez is definitely a fake. True matto is bushier, thinner, grassier, and finer to the touch. Its also way more sensitive, doesn't mean this one can't grow tall but if given good conditions should stay like a normal erio

The variety you guys have is one of the 5 longer erios, could be feather duster, malaytoor, needle leaf, etc.. Grows rather thicker, and longer

It is definitely not feather duster, Ive got some of that too. Also I havent noticed it get very tall, 5-6" at the most, does get thick with a large diameter on bottom though

    Edit: Here's a smallish one

Krissy - I have a bunch of the mystery species. I think it may be the one that originated from Joraan?? I'd be happy to send you some to see for yourself. We were told it was Mato Grosso. We believed it reluctantly and because no one had the real thing. It is really easy to grow, needing splits every 6-8 weeks in high tech tanks. But it is smaller, shorter, and less wavy than the Malayatoor that's in the hobby. May be it is a different geographical form. I actually went to the rivers, creeks, and ponds town of Malayatoor in Kerala, India this past summer and didn't see anything that looks like what burr and i have. This plant is similar in size to breviscapum, another plant that I found nearby. Unlike breviscapum, this has thinner, more vertical (less floppy) leaves. Otherwise, the two are very similar. This species is slightly slower growing and somewhat less weedy than breviscapum.

Anyway, none of this is surprising because there are literally hundreds of Erio species out there.

I'm currently fascinated by Erio lineare. Very cool native. Instead of splitting, it sends out creepers that are really close to the mother plant. I can see it forming a carpet. We shall see. Neat color too, with a hint of agave blue.

FWIW - Malayatoor means town near mountains. The place is known for alternative medicine. Densely populated, so nothing pristine.

Beautiful collections Krissy. This makes me wish I had another tank just for plants only. I really love those little spiky ones. Im not sure a plant could actually be considered "cute" but if it could be, then I would consider them little cuties!

Can Erios really be integrated in a Dutch style tank or would the parameters needed for successful cultivation conflict with other species?
