Replacing a mag drive 5 impeller w/ Mag drive 7

I posted this question on another site with no response yet so I thought I would ask here. I have a mag drive 7 with fractioning impeller and a mag drive 5. I was wanting some more flow out of my sump and the fractioning impeller cuts down on quite a bit of flow so I was wanting to put a mag 7 impeller in the mag 5 thus making it a mag 7. From the info I have been able to gather from some reef forums is the impeller is the only difference from the two but the part # seems to only be the same on the mag3 and mag5. So has anyone else done this or know if the impeller is the same on the mag 5 and mag 7? Hopefully the more experienced and knowledgeable members here will have the answer for me.

Hi,

Can you actually swap them? If the impellers are the same basic size than I think is okay. As an example the smaller rio pumps all look the same up to say 700-800 gph models. Then different for the 1k and then different again for the 1100...

Are we sure it is the impeller alone that drives the max flow? Wouldn't the magnets or whatever in the pump also need to be stronger to make it spin faster? Sorry do not know how they work but trying to help.

Everything is the same for the Mag 5 and Mag 7 from the motor, housing and impeller cover. The only difference is the impeller. From the research I have found on reef central and a couple other reef forums is the impeller is bigger which increases the wattage as it spins faster but was hoping someone has tried this. I have also read that as the mag5/7 are the same except for the impeller the same is true for the 9.5/12/18. There is two bodies, two impeller covers and 3 impellers. So to convert a 9.5 to a 12 you need to change the impeller and cover and to change the 12 to 18 just change the impeller.

Hi,

I think I would simply try and see...

I tried my rio 1k impeller in the 1100 and it made noise and didn't really work. But since the test is quick the pump and impeller still are fine when matched correctly :)

I would give it a shot personally. Just test it in a bucket....

I plan to order the mag 7 impeller and try it in the mag 5 and if it doesn't work I will have a spare impeller for the mag 7 even though it won't be a fractioning impeller. For the $20 the impeller cost I guess it will be worth the try. I'm still a little confused on how the impeller alone would make the motor put out more wattage but I'm not a electrical expert by any means and thanks again Gerry for replying so quick. I guess in order to get a response on the "other" forum I posted this question on you have to ask questions like what kind of fish can I keep with my shrimp or how many watts per gallon do I need to be high light. I knew I would get a thoughtful response here rather quickly.

Sounds like a plan. Don't be too harsh on the other sites :) I think they have so many members and the forums so active, is hard to get noticed. Things are quieter here in comparison.

Plus, I am just a busybody and read each thread lol

Yes I know I can be a little harsh but I still frequent them all, although I have found the information and resources here a little more to my liking. Maybe this site has members a little closer to my age. I have gotten a little grumpier as I have got older and having kids of my own my patience runs a little thin.:gw
