Tank looks gorgeous Macek. My guess with the pantanal is old soil? it still redder than ever I can get it.

No, it's not old soil. Look at the the way the leaves cup and curl and how the old leaves look ragged. That's a sure sign of trace toxicity.

The red pantanal leaf changes, the morphology is related to some change in your routine. They will do this also if you allow them to hit the surface of the tank. That is an ethylene mediated response most likely. As my dosing of traces have been pretty constant, I see zero correlation with trace toxicity.

I've had the CO2 gas tank run out for 2-3 days before I catch it and notice plant growth slows down. Red pantanal will do this long before the others, it's a good indicator plant for that reason, but it does grow extremely fast, so it's a lot of work to keep it also. When the CO2 ran out, I saw a few stems change over to this wider leaf morphology. I've seen that perhaps 8-10 times over the years.

I trim those back and then they regrow fine with nice tips. Given I dose the traces directly onto the plants when I am refilling the tank post water changes.......and the wide leaves occurred when I neglected the tank, dosing, CO2 etc.......rules out any micro issues.

The plant slows its growth rate down(sudden drop in CO2 availability) and tries to shoot for the surface basically. This is an ethylene mediated response. Once it hits the surface, the plant "knows" it is emergent, the ethylene is leaked out easily. Like CO2 gas from the air, the ethylene produced by the plant, does not diffuse out in water like it will in air, it's 10,000 times slower. So once the plant hits the surface, the ehtlyene all diffuses out. I'd figure the water change and exposure would release and you would get this response, but it seems to take longer than a brief water change exposure(a few minutes or even an hour etc). Recovery should be easy.

Rice does this same flooding response as do a number of other wetland plant species.

Old ADA AS still does great for this plant. My 180 still does awesome for color. Messy now.........but the growth is still good.

Sometimes the KH will change in the winter(drops) also, check that as it relates to the CO2. KH generally will increase a little in the summer. Cooler temps will off set less CO2..........and warmer temps will off set some of the increased growth in the summer.

But if the KH changes a lot..........then........you can get into trouble.

This tank is gorgeous. Gives me as a beginner something to strive for! I will not be showing my wife this as it will definitely lead to a bigger hole in my wallet and ego haha.
