Hop on board and buy one, not much and then you can answer far more questions.

Wish this had come out 3 weeks ago before I paid $250 for mine......

I encourage those who can to get one. The results can be illuminating lol

All kidding aside, it has been a great value so far, just to know what I have instead of guessing.....

Matt,

You need the remote sensor to measure under water.

I looked at the link Tom provided and it looks like that is the model they are getting........

Either way, ensure it is calibrated for ELECTRIC and not natural sunlight.

I read a report, where they compare this one to a more expensive meter, and surprisingly, it was more accurate when calibrated to SUNLIGHT and not electric light - makes no sense, but thats what testing had shown.

Good, now folks can get somewhere with light and comparison's.
We are all on the same page and no more of that light watt lux, lumens crap:)

This has been a very long time coming for this hobby.

Hi!,
My name is Daniel and I saw the group buy on barrreport.com and want to join.

Is this serious? Should I cancel the order?

You needed to go to the Apogee web site and place the order by 5pm USA Central time.

Then in the text message box of the order, say REEFCAST.
They will then manually apply the 40% discount to the billing.
This is through Apogee, all you do as far as Reefcast goes is use their name for the group order.

I bought one for our club.
I also have one of my own.
I think quite a few folks bought them so there will be a few running around.

I was thinking that if some or all of the folks that get/have this meter (including myself) could post the following info, it would be very helpful to us all:

1. Make, model, type of light fixture. T5, T8, MH, combo, CF, normal floro, incandescent, etc.
2. Bulb mfg, wattage, kelvin rating if applicable.
3. Distance of fixture from the water surface.
4. PAR range at the surface.
5. PAR range at the substrate.
6. Tank dimensions.

That way each person only does a few basic measurements, one just under the surface, and one at the substrate. Then getting a small range by moving the sensor a few inches back and forth would be easy and worthwhile IMO. For those with MH, this may be worthwhile, as the tubes would have more constant readings across the length of the tank.

I thought that this would give folks a good basis for selecting lights based on PAR rather than wpg. Since we all have the same meter it will help eliminate some variations in the results.

It would not be a controlled test or anything scientific, but would give some good and quite possibly surprising info.

Thoughts?

I second that motion!! If we all do this in a somewhat standardized way we can really provide some useful information for a lot of people.

I will calibrate my PAR-calculator when I get the meter. Then everyone will have easy access to get PAR, PUR and Lux values on any bulb they want!
Here it is:
GTKTest Application

I can also add how Kelvin will change for each bulb with the depth.

You will want to measure ALL along the bottom surface and the top surface and a couple of midway points for the PAR readings on each tank.
Just say around the perimeter of the bottom and top surfaces.

This is much more useful information and the data is not hard to collect;)
This way you have a good idea everywhere in the tank for each bulb, tank size, etc.
