I am extremely interested in any spreadsheet you folks generate. If it includes the type of fixture (T5/T5HO/MH/T8/CF/etc), length and PAR measurements from distance between water surface and light, then distance from water surface to sensor, I'll model a calculator for you around it. I've been wanting this data for a while but do not have the resources (time) to collect all of Hoppy and other's great info. I suspect this set of info will fit the same trends and we can just keep adding more data. What's extra valuable about your user experience is you all are more than qualified to say if the output of a PAR calculator passes the smell and measurement test.

    Hi,

    LUX: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lux

    PAR: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photosynthetically_active_radiation

    All,

    Responding to several posts here:

    1) If you want to be a tester, please PM me. A few folks have done so and I need to compile a list of names, addresses, etc.

    2) I am fine with fish clubs and LFS and the like. However, the person who 'owns' it at the time the club or LFS uses it is responsible for it. I can't give it to 'unknown' if that makes sense.

    3) I need to consolidate the list of data elements to capture. I want to keep it short and sweet as I think we will get more data that way. I will mark as required or optional. I am working on a matrix now and will publish soon.

    4) It may take a week or 2 to make all the arrangements, etc. I want to publish a photo of my meter as is before I send it anywhere. Also need to confirm the 'owners' and their place in line and how it all will work. Clear expectations need to be set and met on both sides to make it work. When should I get it, what do I do with it, how to send to the next person, etc.

    5) If there is a local club or LFS or posters here close to Boca Raton, please advise and we can work out a quick loan or I can come by and we can do it quickly together.

    6) I intend to publish any data collected on this site with Tom's permission of course. Even if we get 5-10 samples, is more than we have now :)

Appreciate the responses and sorry if I am a little slow in responding...little busy right now...

I just thought some associations would like to contact you and take responsibility for loaning it out. As I said, I don't blame dutchy for being cautious and I wouldn't blame you if this sounds like a bad idea. OTOH, the more data we collect the better for Wet.

If Vaughn is correct (why wouldn't he be), I expect that I have about 80 micromols at the substrate and about 320 micromols at half the distance from the bulb. What a great opportunity to actually see what I have, thank you for being so generous.

    Hi all,

    Here is a quick update....

I have 7 testers so far and some owe me a real address and/or name:

    shoggoth43
pat w - Update - Pat did send the info, I am a moron.....sorry Pat
    gbark
    hbosman

Please PM me with this info or you will never see this meter.....

Once I have 10 folks or close to it, I will map out a schedule and publish it.

I figure 7-10 days max for each person and I hope it is considerably less than that, but I want to plan for vacations
    and general life :)

Here is the data I hope to capture:

    Fixture

    Make
    Model
    Dimensions (LXWXH)
    Number of bulbs
Type (MH, CF, T5, combo, etc)
    Distance to surface

    Tank

    Volume
    Dimension (LXWXH)
    Make
    Model

    Bulbs

    Make
    Model
    Temp (6500, 10k, etc)

    PAR Measurements

    Surface
    Right End
    Left End
    Center

    Mid-water
    Right End
    Left End
    Center

    Substrate
    Right End
    Left End
    Center

    Appreciate any thoughts...

You might want to add reflector type to the fixture data.

Can you post the spreadsheet when you have a final version?

I'll probably take various readings for myself based on tube combos and I may play with some diferent heights if I can rig something that's cheap and stable. Would you want the extra data if I do or do you think it might confuse things?

    Pat,

    Absolutely....

I am hoping folks provide as much info as possible even if I did not include it. I intend to share it all.......

Using simple closet shelving is cheap, quick, simple, and effective....lay the fixture across like a 'shelf' is all...the mounting racks have many adjustment slots for the arms about 1-2" apart based on the hardware set you get..

    PM sent.

Also, water conditions might be useful if for some reason the water is cloudy or stained. I'm not sure it would affect much if it's tea colored, but cloudy is another matter entirely.

Any sort of splash guard or cover between the lights is worth noting too as that can make a big difference.

    Gerry,

I have an apogee meter, if you want, I can send you my data. Not sure if you want to make sure the meter is exactly the same unit though. The measurements are being taken in the front glass or in the middle of the tank?

    Regards,
    Evandro.

    Hi all,

Sorry for the delay in posting....

I have 7 testers other than myself. A few folks have also chimed in and will share PAR values they have using their own meter. Thanks to all so far for their interest and assistance....

I need to do the following and will by the next Monday:

    1). Publish data sheet.
2). Post instructions and short video of meter use.
3). Post video/pics of current meter condition.

As far as the schedule I propose the following:

1). No deposit is required from any tester. I will trust all the testers as well as USPS :)
2). Each tester is required to send it to another tester (or to me via request) via express mail or similar and please add insurance up to $250 in case of shipping damage/loss.
3). Each tester gets up to 5-7 max (?) days to send it along? I want folks to have time, but if you can be done sooner, please send it along to the next person.
4). Each tester will need to know the address of the NEXT recipient. If this is an issue please advise ASAP! So we can figure something out. I want to retain any anonymity possible.

I was thinking of the following schedule more to geography than any other factor:

    pat w
    hbosman
    tug
    joshvito
    shoggoth
    csmith
    jcardano1

I want to try and keep it simple and quick.

    Am I missing anything?

    Sounds good to me.

One request, could you put last on the list? I'm still working on a way to adjust height and would like to get that in place prior to my turn.

If that is a problem, forget the request and sent it on.

In hopes of better light control

I just got these off ebay:

jcardano1, When I was over on MFK, I noticed you had the same devices on your lights. You like 'em?
