I am setting up a 20 long planted tank. My current set up is:

20 gallon long
Dual T5NO lights 2x18 watts (1x6700k, 1xColormax)
Aquaclear 30 and Aquaclear 50 HOB filters
Fluorite Substrate

My questions are in regards to lighting. The light currently rests atop the tank, roughly 12 inches above the substrate. I was leaning toward wanting a low light/low tech tank, mostly because I'm new to this and want to ease into the planted tank hobby. Maybe I'm way off base, but it seems like a low tech tank is a bit easer to care for and good place to learn for a complete newbie.

My understanding is that the plants will recieve very little if any benifit from the colormax bulb. So considering this, is my set up going to be too bright to grow low light plants? Do I need to consider higher light plants and adding CO2, or perhaps excel?

I am certainly open to suggestions for plant that will work well with my setup.

Thanks in advance.

The colormax bulb will bring out the colors of the fish and plants. Try raising your lights 3 or so inches above the tank. You can use a piece of 2x4 standing on edge.

See how nice bronze wenditiis will look with that setup.
