    Confused about EI method...Please help.
    Hello Again,

I am currently dosing a cap of flourish and flourish excel to my 60 gallon tank. I have two eheim filters running on this tank and one of them has denitrate and phosguard. My understanding was that if the levels of nitrate and phosphate were too high in the tank that would cause algae. So I invested on phosguard and denitrate to bring the readings down. However, I am reading the post on EI method and for a 40-60 gallon aquarium it suggest to add potassium nitrate, and potassium phosphate...doesn't this defeat the purpose of having denitrate and Phosguard in the filter?

High levels of PO4 and NO3 don't cause algae. (What is high?) My tank has NO3=30 and PO4=4 but no algae. If you have algae, think about what is missing, not about what is there. So you clearly don't need anything in your filters that removes those nutrients. It's only useful if you have a tank without plants.

    regards,
