Hello everyone! My name is Chad and I started getting into aquariums in August 2017. I rarely take photos but here is a dump of what I had on my phone from the last year. Everything from zero to where I am now.

    August 2017

My girlfriend leaves my in charge of her betta while she leaves for yoga camp.

    Ipj3RqxYWnr8gtsAHghWjY_8OAdxv-IT9r8BZoT8nG1h_5hm4xNvgZVl2KS11HVcV_raNPj-BDIi_1Kplk=w1293-h728-no.jpg

I get my own betta Baxter.

I quickly decide his tank is an embarrassment and buy a spec III

    And then a flex

at the end of September I start a rimless dry start

    October 2017
With plans to move to my girls place I setup a holding tank at my parents house.

    November 2017

My high tech 5N survives the move, but all the MC got uprooted and replanted.

Early December my 5N starts getting hit with hair algae hard. At the time I was dosing full EI so I reduced my ferts but still got over ran by algae. Looking back, the tank got direct sunlight for at least 4 hours a day.

The 20 long gets a little rescape and a trim.

I have managed to get green water twice in both of my high-light, high co2, high fert tanks. UV sterilizer clears it right up and the plants seem happy.

    Thanks for stopping by,

A little update. I added 6 zebria danios to the tank in the second picture but they were all hiding.

My tap water is super soft so I use gh booster on water change day to add calcium and magnesium.

    20 gallon tank

    Monday

    - 50% Water Change
    - 2 tsp gh booster
    - 1/8 tsp kno3
    - 1/32 tsp kh2po4

    Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday

    - 1/16 tsp CSM+B

    Wednesday, Friday

    - 1/8 tsp kno3
    - 1/32 tsp kh2po4

    Sunday

    - Rest

For a long while I was dosing 1/4 tsp csm+b 3x week. I fudged the numbers somewhere and it got written down. I had 2 tanks get green water on the same day on two separate occasions dosing this high. I also lost a ton most of my cherry shrimp. Keep on chuggin'

    Hi Chad,
How long have you been on DSM. One of your photos show that you are using DSM. Could you share your knowledge & cons experience while DSM.
    Many thanks.

I only did DSM once for that 5 gallon tank. Mold started showing up around week 2 and I flooded. I haven't tried a dry start since.

I guess I have this round jar I threw some dwarf hair grass clippings in that could count as a dry start. It was almost fully carpeted when it got knocked out of the window. Its recovering nicely.

I also have been doing an emersed tub with some Erios in it.

Akadama with some peat moss. I think I did a 5:1 ratio. I replace the water once a week with water from one of my tanks. They are Erio Polaris for anyone wondering. I just don't know when I should transfer them to a tank. I feel the time is getting close.

Small update. Green water is returning in the top right tank on my rack. This is the third time I have got GW without any other real signs of algae. This tank and the tank below it get the same treatment so I am going to attribute the GW to all of the loose osmocote balls on top of the substrate. I used some root tabs and with all the plant moving I do they just get balls everywhere.

My plants have been growing like mad. I have been throwing away way too many stems so I think I will start doing a raok or a trim sales thread.

The most exciting thing for me is that my UG is starting to send out a flower in my living room tank.

My big taiwan bee momma is still going strong also. ~20 more days till shrimplets!

The kedagang mini I got from buceplant came with 3 different types of moss on it? I know the UG in the buce was from my tank but there is no moss anywhere but the buce.

Here are some pictures. Questions or thoughts please! Thanks for stopping by.

Big water change to combat GW hopefully. I am trying to not pull out the UV sterilizer if I can help it. Its starting to feel like a crutch.

Just a small update. I will try and attach pictures this afternoon when the lights come on.

I now have 3 berried blue bolts. The first mama should have less than a week till babies. I am jazzed.

The UG stalk seemed to have stalled out and never flowered, but there is a new stalk shooting up.

I still have green water in one of my tanks but my girlfriend and I have decided that this stuff is gold for houseplants. Since I started watering our plants with the green water growth has exploded. The plants all seem fine too, not going to whip out the UV.

My RCS colony that I thought got nuked with CSM+B overdose is coming back. I've seen 6 at once when a few weeks ago I thought they were all dead... And there is a pea puffer in the tank... These shrimp are TUFF.

My emersed erio tub is doing well, I really want to transfer some of the plants to my tanks but I really don't have room. I think its time to put my collectoritis in check and completely remove some species from my tanks. Ludwigia Repens I'm looking at you. I also can remove some duplicate species that I have both in a grow out tank and my main display tank.

My living room tank is growing awesome, but I have decided I hate planting in akadama. Sand is a much easier substrate to work with and makes less of a mess if I want to uproot half my tank. I loath the thought of having to replant tops one of these weeks rather than just hacking everything back. But at some point the bush gets too thick and too tall. This happens fast in a shallow 20 gallon tank.

Thanks for listening to my rambling. Any questions?

I've been thinking of removing the wood and all the weeds from this tank to make room for cooler plants :D

Update time. I did a lot of trimming and replanting. Removed the wood from one of my shrimp tanks to make room for more plants. I've been trying to reduce the number of species in each tank because it was getting ridiculous.

The first few Erio Polaris that got submerged are doing great. Growing much faster than the emersed setup. I will be moving the majority 30+ more into a grow out tank soon. I also started a bunch a Erio Hainan Island seeds that are taking off like crazy. I will probably have a 100 of them if they keep it up.

I've been seeing more and more blue bolt babys every day. 3+ berried females, about to have a population explosion unless I mess something up.

No fry from the 24k golden white clouds yet. They have been in green water for a few weeks but I finally decided to whip out the UV. The tank had green water for a couple months.

I decided to put some plants I picked while on a walk with the dogs into one of my fishless aquariums. In a few days planaria were everywhere. 2 doses of pancure-c and they are gone. The plant just looks like tall DHG but seems to have different roots. I only put a few blades in the tank but they seem to be growing fine.

Monte Carlo is out of control, I am about to put up a sales thread for trimmings.

also, I got a dope snail.

Phishless, thanks for the like ahead of time. If there is anyone else out there please say hello!

as always, lots of bad pictures :\

Loved reading your journal (with my Boston "Lucky Jack" sitting in). I want to start up a plants only "Farm Tank" once all my other projects are running.

    What is a dope snail?
