I suspsect I have mislabeled my ferts. Any clever ideas to distinguish between KNO3 and KH2PO4 salts?

Hi
Apparently the Kno3 smells a tad cheesy...Ive never smelt it so I wouldn't know.
Ive got to make up some ferts tomorrow so I will have a sniff.

Energy

Hi,

Any clumping pretty much says it is KNO[SUB]3[/SUB].;) I think the link above mentions that along with a slight “moldy” odor, a taste will leave a “moldy” aftertaste. KNO[SUB]3[/SUB] will be a dingy yellow next to KH[SUB]2[/SUB]PO[SUB]4[/SUB].

KH[SUB]2[/SUB]PO[SUB]4[/SUB] will be bright white free flowing, no clumping.:)

KH[SUB]2[/SUB]PO[SUB]4[/SUB] dissolves more readily. In a few milliliters of distilled water a gram of KH[SUB]2[/SUB]PO[SUB]4[/SUB] will dissolve readily, a gram of KNO[SUB]3[/SUB] will take a lot longer.

Finally and maybe more fun mix equal parts of the unknown substance with sugar and light with a torch, the KNO[SUB]3[/SUB] will be energetic.

Hope this helps,

Thanks for this guys.

@Bio- I actually tried to burn them both...but had forgotten that it needed the sugar to go. It came back to me about 5 minutes ago :D Thanks for confirming.

Biollante, Your Pyro-maniacally Motivated, Evil Plant Monster

Hi,

“’Cause fire is (not only) the devil's only friend,” fire can be illuminating…

You can make a nice hat of fire with sucrose and potassium nitrate somewhat like Arthur Brown had in this video. He actually set his hair on fire while preforming this song with that hat. :D

Simple Syrup

Hi Left C,

1:1; sugar: KNO3 is the basic 8th grade smoke bomb.
:rolleyes::D

Sucrose is sugar, it may be they meant syrup of some sort, such as simple syrup 1:1; sugar: water.

I think they may have used a paste to get the fire and smoke to hang on to the head gear. Something on the order of 1:1:1; sugar: water: KNO3. The further the simple syrup is cooked down results in a thicker “paste.”

The problem is the NO3 is energetic and sugar becomes a molten mass that can be propelled with its own Oxygen supply and does not stop burning.

It appears the paste in your YouTube video was not well mixed.
:p

Physics Is Phun... Wonder Why I have Such A Hard Time With English, Sheesh!

Hi Left C,

There are all kinds of alternate uses…

Alternate methods of identification…

Be careful…
:gw

Yes, ShadowMac, I rather do like the, well ah, Physics of oxidizing agents, particularly those found just about everywhere, made me popular with my Uncle Sam in the days of my misspent youth…

Since you are all back in the 8[SUP]th[/SUP] grade maybe you should ask Biollante how to start a campfire.:p

Not That I Would Ever Do Any of... Well This...

Hi Shawn, All,

Contextually, I assume the LoudCreatureWhatSharesMySpace is referring to what, the less educated and refined among us might regard as a predilection for cheating…
 I can think of 50 plus ways to start a fire without resorting to store bought ignition devices. :p

Contextually, I assume one of these four methods is what the LoudCreatureWhatSharesMySpace is referring too.
:D

{Note that in the first method they use too much glycerin, two or three drops are sufficient, water alone can be used, but will take a bit longer. Water and some of the finer soaps work well.

A couple of these are great for faking fire by rubbing two sticks together, good be why I got tossed out of the Plantling Scouts.

it is a good thing I didn't know about these recipes in my highschool chemistry class....I got into enough trouble with the bunson burner. I have the KMnO4 and glycerin....hhhmmmmm

The alkali metals are fun too. Especially K, Rb, Cs and the best, Fr, if we could get it. But Fr is too reactive and radioactive.
