This way the CO2 goes past and cannot back up into the air pump and out(losing CO2 to the air outside). When the air pump comes on, the solenoid for the CO2 is closed, so the air opens to check valve from this direction, and enters the mazzei.
An air pump + a check valve etc cost less than a solenoid.
You can do it with a solenoid also.

I am somewhat confused on this setup. the mazzei sucks so hard that when I have the co2 on, the mazzei sucks from the o2 and co2 line simultaneously mixing o2 with co2. the only way i can keep this from happening is reversing the check valve on the o2 line keeping anything from entering the o2 tube. does an air pump have restriction from o2 getting sucked from it? how do you keep the o2 from leaking when the co2 is on?
this is my setup (please ignore the dots i had to add it because my diagram got all scrunched up and un-legible when i tried to post it using spaces)
