Hi,

I was wondering if I could use Magnesium nitrate [Mg(NO4)2.6H2O] for dosing nitrates and magnesium.
Can someone tell me the amount of Magnesium nitrate to use for creating a stock solution?

I believe the target should be 5-10ppm of Mg and 10-30ppm of NO3.

Thanks!

A Little Maybe

Hi,

I am going to assume you do mean Magnesium nitrate, Mg(NO[SUB]3[/SUB])[SUB]2[/SUB].6H[SUB]2[/SUB]O.;)

Since about 9.5% is Magnesium and 11% is Nitrogen, you are limited by the amount of Magnesium you want or need in your tank. If you wish to add 5-ppm Mg, the you will only get a little less than 5.1-ppm NO[SUB]3[/SUB].

Ya, you're right, its "Mg(NO3)2.6H2O" :)

Ok, so how much (grams?) of Mg(NO3)2 should I dissolve in, say 150 ml, of water to get the required concentrations?

Thanks!

I have not heard of anyone really using this salt.
Ca(NO3)2, but not this one.

No reason why not, I'd mix some with the KNO3 etc to bump those up, but MgSO4*7H2O is so cheap and widely avail, few have bothered, Mg is Mg.

Hi,

What are you trying to dose?

Do you have access to KNO[SUB]3[/SUB] or Ca(NO[SUB]3[/SUB])[SUB]2[/SUB].4H[SUB]2[/SUB]O?

Added this stuff to http://calc.petalphile.com -- This stuff looks awesome to me (high solubility, really neat proportions). Example:

Mg%28NO3%292.6H2O.png

I've never heard of this stuff either but get this for percentages:

Mg: ~9.5%
N: ~11%
NO3: ~48%

I missed this One Entirely

Hi Wet, All,

This stuff is quite rare and is the stuff that gives the bat poop its oomph.
;)

Known as Nitromagnesite, a portmanteau for NITROgen and MAGNESium, formed as a leachate of bat poop in high humidity caves.

I realized I miscalculated when I saw Wet’s always-definitive calculation for Nitrogen, which is actually places the NO3, not the NO3-N calculation at 48% NO3.

Therefore, for every unit dose of Nitromagnesite, there is 5 times as much NO3 as Mg, making this darn near a good method for dosing NO3 and Mg.

I doubt it will ever catch on but it is viable.

Hey thanks guys. That is so much better! Will start the dosing and let you know the effects.

Oh, by the way I also have some ZnSO4 and H3BO3. Plan to dose zinc and boron for trace elements. I believe the levels are 0.1ppm for Zn and B. Am I right?

Thank!

Zn(II) Redox potential~-0.75, It Don't Wanna Reduce, Needs Encouragement

Hi,
Be careful with the Boric acid, the margins from non-limiting for plants to toxic for our critters and filters are quite narrow.:gw

I am pretty sure you will need to add a chelate to the zinc.:)

Other than that have fun!:D

For Zn, I follow CSM+B at EI level, which is 0.01 - 0.02 PPM 3x a week with 50% WC weekly.
75% of Zn in my traces mix is from ZnSo4.7H20, another 25% is chelated.

B is 0.03-0.06 PPM 3x a week, etc..
