IMG_2158.JPG IMG_2159.JPG IMG_2160.JPG IMG_2161.JPG Did some maintenance today, chopped down the wisteria because the lower portions were sending out shoots and some nice new growth. Plus they were starting to shade the surrounding areas so I cut off the tops and replanted them. Angustifolia I chopped about a weak ago and is sending out beautiful new growth. Kompakt continues to thrive, really excellent little plant for low tech. Hydro Japan was getting a little unruly so I removed whatever dead leaves I saw and thinned it out, it'll be bustling again in no time. The ludwigia is slowly makings its way to the top, once it does I'll chop it back I just want to make sure it roots nicely. The rotala continues to grow however at less than my snails pace, nice green growth just not very quickly. I placed a minuscule amount of osmo + nearby so I'm curious to see how that pans out. I also switched out my FEIT LED to a CREE 5000k to see if there was a difference. I want to say it provides better ripple effect however I think that is due to my skimmer removing the surface film and allowing better light penetration. I am contemplating switching to a 2700k LED bulb instead because I think it will bring out better coloration in the ludwigia and rotala. Either way it still is very pleasing to the eye, just wish reds were more vibrant.

Going to try a Y socket and add a 3W Red led, see if that may help bring out the red in the ludwigia and rotala.

Gonna leave the CREE 5k for now and may try the 2700k soon.

Plants are filling in nicely, but rotala is still very slow. Ludwigia is exploding and getting close to the top. My wisteria is growing new leaves but the new growth is more rounded in shape and not as serrated. Just purchased some dry ferts so as soon as I receive them I'll start dosing once a week and see if that impacts growth.

image.jpg Does hygro kompakt usually do this when it’s growing well? New leaves are a nice reddish orange, growing well or a deficiency?

I did some reading and it says high light it will do this however my lighting isn’t too intense. Apparently just enough though.

Added a baby bristlenose and 4 cherry shrimp, compliments of petco. This one store happens to get really good stock. I was looking for amanos and they didn’t get any but I just happened to look down and I saw the cherry shrimp! Will update with pics tomorrow

I also swapped out the 5000k CREE for the 2700k and I actually like the warmer tone much better. It’s not so much yellow as it is warm looking, and I think it works well for this tank.

Not sure why I can’t seem to keep them although I know I’m not the only one. Plants still doing well, just started dosing the column via EI so we’ll see how that impacts growth. One patch of my hygro kompakt started to to melt away at the stems and it’s probably because it was so tightly grouped hoping after trimming it down a replanting it salvaged itself. Rotala remains slow growing, however I chopped it in half and replanted the tops so we’ll see how that goes. Acquired some new ludwigia because although it was growing well up top, the bottoms were leggy and deteriorating. The bunch I just got were clearly emmersed grown but have some nice thick stems that should root well. Wisteria doing very well and the replanted tops are already reaching the height of the original stems. Hydro continues to grow well and I expect to explode now that I’m adding more macros. I’d like to add more life to this tank so thinking of adding some galaxy raspboras. Also I went back to the 5000k CREE daylight led, after comparing to the 2700k it seemed that growth somewhat stalled with its addition. I would assume being heavy in the red spectrum that less usable light was available, despite having identical output to the 5000k. My guess would be that a higher wattage led at that temperature would work better.

The newer ludwigia stems are much healthier and showing some nice color. All hygro doing well except I was concerned about my angustifolia until I realized it was prob just old growth beginning to wan. Hydro Japan still thriving and I’m sure the addition of EI dosing is only going to improve that. I had to trim it today because keeping it down has been difficult. Rotala seems to look happier since I chopped it and spread the stems a bit. My betta feels right at home and has all the “pillows” he could ever want and my baby pleco has removed any visible algae that may have been around. Seems certainly clear to me that any issues arising in this tank must only be due to a lack of CO2 as Tom has redundantly explained. There is certainly no lack of any nutrients with the soil and EI dosing and my light has remained constant. I cannot stress the ease of keeping this tank.

Moved some plants around and added some new ones. Still doing great and I’ve actually stopped dosing for a while now. The extra dosing did not seem to assist growth and apparently there is enough leaching into the water column to keep the hydro satisfied.

Starting to color up and very active! They have learned that my betta is king but that doesn’t stop them from exploring. Btw can anyone ID this plant, pretty sure it’s ludwigia but not sure what form exactly. This is obviously it’s emmersed appearance and it’s growing very slow. The bunch on the right which i believe is ammania gracilis is actually growing nicely since the first day, slow, but growing.

image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg Here’s an update, just did a water change after a month or so. I’m looking for an idea for a plant in the center in the back any ideas or recommendations? I have ludwigia glandulosa there now but it’s stagnant and not growing. The ammania on the right is doing okay, new growth keeps curling but i think that’s a co2 issue. Still keeping a nice pinkish orange so I’m happy with it there. Thanks for any input.

Added java fern, some reineckii and a new batch of rotala. Sorry It’s a little cloudy from the water change. First one in a while.
