Plecos are good as long as you don't really expect them to live on scraping algae off your tank sides and plants because after they get past little they stop doing that as their primary feed. If you have slower moving fish like goldfish type, plecos will eat the slime covering off them until the goldfish die. If you want to keep them until they become monstrous then that is another matter. An excellent food for plecos, and other fish as well, try unpeeled slices of jicama dropped in the tank.

I'd soon rather deal with algae than pleco poop

Depends on the pleco. Bristlenose, not too bad, may munch on a few plants. Common pleco or other largish varieties I don’t expect you would have a planted tank for long. ;)

I prefer coryadoras or otos myself.

I have both Corrys and Bristlenose; love them both!
