How long will Mopane (Mopani) wood last in a tank?

Hello everybody,

I just purchased a peice of Mopani wood for my tank. It looks great and is nice and dense so I think it will sink without using any ballast to keep it down.

How long can I presume this piece of wood can last before starting to rot away?

Cheers!

Hi,

Be aware that it is a high tannin wood, it will turn your tank tea color, dark if it is a large piece. Me I do not mind that sort of thing. :)

Some pour hot (boiling) water over the wood pouring the water off several times.

It is beautiful wood.

Hey Biollante,

Indeed it is high in tannins, I don't really mind the tea-like water myself, but the store where I got it from seem to pre-soak their mopani. I did not get tea-like water. :(

It's pricey, but it looks good (bad picture quality, using webcam...)

Since I just rescaped my tank, I though about adding something new. I never had wood in my tanks before. Hopefully, it will look good in a few months when the Barclaya Longifolia shows the top of its head from the middle of the wood (and when everything starts to grow again).

Cheers!
