How long will Mopane (Mopani) wood last in a tank?

Hello everybody,

I just purchased a peice of Mopani wood for my tank. It looks great and is nice and dense so I think it will sink without using any ballast to keep it down.

How long can I presume this piece of wood can last before starting to rot away?

Wonderful Hardwood

Hi,

Be aware that it is a high tannin wood, it will turn your tank tea color, dark if it is a large piece. Me I do not mind that sort of thing.

Some pour hot (boiling) water over the wood pouring the water off several times.

It is beautiful wood.

Hey Biollante,

Indeed it is high in tannins, I don't really mind the tea-like water myself, but the store where I got it from seem to pre-soak their mopani. I did not get tea-like water.

It's pricey, but it looks good (bad picture quality, using webcam...)





Since I just rescaped my tank, I though about adding something new. I never had wood in my tanks before. Hopefully, it will look good in a few months when the Barclaya Longifolia shows the top of its head from the middle of the wood (and when everything starts to grow again).
