How do mosses grow?

I have a couple different mosses. If you trim them do they stop growing in length and get thicker? Or do they continue growing in length and just get thick at the base over time?

Hi Paul,

Most mosses will branch more/thicken with trimming, but they will all continue to lengthen if you let them..........

Can you id the mosses you have so folks with these species can chime in with their experience?

The simple 'java' mosses I have kept will thicken with trimming.......

I have my moss mounted to things like rocks or wood so I can trim neatly in my water filled sink.
I like Fissiden because it stay at only length and does not need much care.

I have several types flame, christmas, fissdens, willow, & java. Waiting for some taiwan and peacock.

I was mostly curious before I need to trim if it was like a stem plant where it stops growing in length and gets bushy.

I want to spread it around so I am planning on letting it grow trim it and reattach it it. This will work right?

Never grew moss before and just want to hear if this works from people that have.

But I assume that will work.

Thanks Paul
