Well, the top gravel is just 1/4-1/2 inch (for aesthetic purposes), below that I have Eco-Complete Plant Substrate. Also Glosso has grown horizontally at the beginning very well. To stimulate its growth furthermore, I have added Flourish Tabs into the substrate right among the Glosso. Your thoughts?

If Gloss has grown well in the beginning there's clearly no reason to worry about the substrate composition you've chosen.

Glosso should never be planted in clumps rather it should be separated to single plantlets before planting at distances of about half to one inch.

Otherwise I'm running out of ideas why it would grow upwards for you.
