Hi,

Anyone kept Geophagus species using Flourite Black Sand? Is it safe for them?

I've used FBS several times with good success in planted tanks, but now I want to set a tank up with some sand sifters, specifically Geophagus Sveni. I'll restrict areas with river stones and plant crypts in small crevices in between hardscape, leaving a big area in the front of the tank for the fish to eat and sift. I'm wondering if this substrate is safe to use for the fish which sift the sand through their gills. Many references on the web state the fish need fine "soft sand" which I guess means sand that doesn't have sharp edges. Anyone with first hand experience, I would love to hear from you.

Thanks,

Russ
