Free Presentation: "Borneo Exploration" and “Where Do Our Plants Come From?” By Karen Randall (AGA) Presented by GSAS

The Greater Seattle Aquarium Society is pleased to announce for our first meeting of the 2018-2019 season one of our most-requested speakers, plant guru Karen Randall! Karen's expertise is on planted display aquariums and the study and propagation of aquatic plants. She's an author (her book Sunken Gardens was published last year), a photographer, publisher, aquascaping contest judge and organizer.

And she is also an explorer: Karen travels frequently to study aquatic plants in the wild. On Tuesday, September 11th, Karen will be premiering a brand new talk on her most recent exploration to Borneo – GSAS will be the first club in the world to see this talk! Normal meeting time and location, 7:30 PM (6:30 setup and social hour) at Seattle Pacific University Otto Miller Hall, Room 109. Monthly auction to follow.

In addition, Karen has agreed to present a second, beginner-friendly talk on Monday September 10th, entitled “Where Do Our Plants Come From?” This presentation examines collecting in the wild, identification, commercial nursery farming, tissue culture plants and how to use them effectively, and plants that are mostly traded between hobbyists (and why). This talk will also be in Otto Miller Hall, but starting at 7 PM. Because this will be presentation only, we should be out by 8:30 (or 9 if y’all have tons of questions!).

The presentation, which is open to the public, will be Tuesday, September 11th, 2018 at 7:30 PM at Seattle Pacific University; Otto Miller Hall; Room 109; West Nickerson Street and 3rd Avenue West.

Doors will open about 6:30 PM for a 'social hour'; the meeting will start at 7:30 PM.

After the meeting, join us for our monthly auction and help to support the club that brings us all our these outstanding speakers.

Guests are welcome; no entrance fee

Family friendly but no childcare provided
    Free parking, accessible building
    No furry or feathered pets
Go to Greater Seattle Aquarium Society (https://www.gsas.org/) for more information and directions

Greater Seattle Aquarium Society - wow, you guys are in for such a treat, having recently bought her book, I can happily recommend it to anybody who wants a quick and simple reference. The few $'s it costs will save new and old not only time but even money when it comes to getting some sort of qualified opinion. Lets face it, taking advice form your LFS or figuring out who is plausible on forums is not for all.

Borneo - magical , spend a few days running around in Mulu last year - my first ever in a real tropical rain forest - it is amazing to see the jungle floor transform during a typical downpour. Any chance you guys will be doing a live stream of her presentation about the Borneo trip? I would love to hear how the pro's do a few days running up and down little streams.

    Hi @f-fish

We have been fortunate enough to have Karen visit twice before and I agree - her talks are always excellent! We will be the first club to hear her Borneo talk - possibly a 'beta test' prior to taking it to other clubs. Sorry no streaming.

    Hi @f-fish (aka Ferdie)

I've been on the club board of directors for about 10 years serving in various capacities. Shortly after I joined the Board membership requirements were reviewed and debated on several occasions. Ultimately it was decided to keep the club 'local' rather than becoming 'virtual' because there were already a lot of 'virtual' opportunities for our hobby from chat groups, to forums, and of course Facebook.

    Hi All,

Just a reminder that tomorrow night is our first talk by Karen Randall and Tuesday night is our first regular GSAS meeting for the 2018-2019 season with Karen's second talk. I hope to see you at one or the other, personally I will be at both!

Karen Randall's talk yesterday evening was on aquarium plants tracing the process from plant exploring, documentation done at collecting sites, to plant identification, to initial propagation, to nursery propagation, and finally to aquarium was very good; it is a talk that has only been given at the AGA Convention in 2016 and two other clubs.

Tonights's night is Karen's brand new talk on her recent plant collecting expedition to Borneo - it should be great! There should be a good auction tonight night as well. Hope you can make it tonight!
