Happy Time Pills
Hi,
Prazi-Pond’s active ingredient in the fish trade is known as Praziquantel or “Prazi,” in the dog and cat realm it is known as "Droncit," C[SUB]16[/SUB]H[SUB]24[/SUB]N[SUB]2[/SUB]O[SUB]2[/SUB] (it may appear as 5, 6-MeO-MiPT0),is or was Molindone a psychedelic drug used as an anti-psychotic.
One gram treats about 375 liters.:gw
I do not know about your fish, but I can tell you from listening in on their conversations, my fish can use a good anti-psychotic drug now and then!
If you need it, I can tell you how to dose PP, but try to get the Prazi. One set this year, once again next year and do not let any more goldfish in without treatment and quarantine.

Hello, old thread bump I know, but I wanted to ask specifically about this post in addition to my possible fish infection.
What was the bit about Molindone? The link or reference is dead, but I can’t find any reference to that drug in relation to Prazi or the other treatment mentioned. I certainly don’t want my skin to come into contact with any meds (something I try to avoid anyhow) associated with psychedelics or anti-psychotics. A couple doses of LSD 30 years ago was enough for me.
Onto the fish….I noticed flashing a couple days ago in my tank with Choprai Danio and Characodon Audax (Black Prince Goodied).
I’ve not received any new fish recently, other than the Goodieds a couple weeks ago. They are captive bred and from a trusted source that says they aren’t having any issues. I did get some new plants a couple weeks ago, but they’re mostly in another tank and that tank is not showing any issues. I will ask the supplier if they have any fish with the plants and what the source of them is, they are a small reputable company that is farming their own, but they do import some. I don’t believe the common flukes survive more than 6-8 hours without a host?….but the eggs probably do.
The Danios I’ve had for a year. They only started flashing along with the Goodieds the other night. They were recently put with the goodieds about a week ago as a dither due to this Goodied being more like a Cichlid behaviorally, and the male getting extremely aggressive with his mate. Separate story, but I’m still working on that issue, she is separated again in a specimen container hung inside the tank.
I witnessed the flashing and kept watching to see if it was a one-off, as infrequently flashing could just be an itch…but it usually doesn’t end up that way. I watched for awhile and sure enough saw it several times and then saw a danio do it as well. So time to take action I figured. Water parameters test out fine.
I had noticed the male not eating much a day or two before I saw the flashing. He’s also been glass surfing, but this seems directly related to getting separated from the female. It happened both times they were separated previously and halted when she returned. He seems more reclusive as well. Otherwise fine as are all of the fish as far as outward signs and behaviors.
Ordered Prazipro and treated last night. Observing them for about 10 minutes after a water change in preparation for the Prazi treatment I saw no flashing!….I expected it to have gotten worse. I treated and fed. Everyone including the male goodied ate well and no flashing.
The way everything has happened and I do feel like an infestation of parasites seems on the low side as I don’t know where they would have come from, makes me think this was possibly something else. Nonetheless I feel as if I should treat this as if they have an external parasite and the two most likely candidates are the ones mentioned here.
I did a lot of reading, including here and man, I’m worried I’ll never be rid of them. I don’t want to do the tank transfers and all that, but perhaps I should. Seems it could be done with less tanks as long as you sterilize the one you just moved them out of?
When should the second dose of Prazi be? I can’t find exacting enough info on this. One parasite is a livebearer and the other eggs? The eggs depend on temperature, but I can’t find info on timing and temps.
I’ve seen that a salt dip can/should also be done?
One video from a vet mentions formalin as the second dose after prazi and then back to prazi. In another section he talks about 3 doses of Prazi. I’ll find and link the video.
Ugggh, I’m so overwhelmed. It’s really bad timing for me, but these setups have been a big project for me the past year of entering back into the hobby with a focus on plants and now I got a holy grail CARES species that was also very expensive, that I need to treat.
Wondering if I need to treat my other tanks, of which there are two. No signs of it there, but I’m mixing nets and plants and feeding daphnia, etc….one has fish the other just plants and one shrimp, it’s where the Choprai came out of. So no sign of this in the other with CPD, bristles and Cory’s seems odd to me as well.
Do I need to worry about the daphnia or their water being infected as well?
Thanks so much!
