First layer before 3" of ADA AZ: Earthworm casings, peat, osmocote?

    In the planning stages for a heavily planted tank. After reading (alot of reading!), I plan on using three inches of ADA AZ. What is best to add before the 3" of ADA AZ, earthworm casings, peat, osmocote, something else?

    Add nothing else, just the 3" of ADA AZ and call it a day?

    I was struggeling with this too a few weeks ago. I found this a nice experiment:


    I ended up with ADA and nothing else and I'm off to a good start.

    I used something called microb lift capalm ecological labratories makes it it is very economical and has a high cec value but os inert has no nutrients and the only down side is the color is light tan color but i have had great results doing the same thing with ada cap on it.( its very inexpensive made for ponds)

    I have half of an extra bag of Eco-Complete laying around. I was going to layer this down first with some red clay before a couple inches of Medium grain Aquasoil and then top it off with fine grain aquasoil. I figure the high-cec value of the eco-complete would be good as a base, and similar to the ADA Powersand that Amano frequents so much.

    For my fish tank I ended up with just Aquasoil. Nothing else
