Hi All,

I thought i would start this thread, to see which is the most commonly used external filter, what output it gives measured from the discharge pipe, compared to its manufacture rating. And how you compile the media within.

So i will Start!

Eheim Pro2 2028 rated at 750l/hr

I have all 3 baskets filled with sera siporax
0ne wool pad

16mm tubing using glass lily pipes.

I get 600l/hr

Note: I do not use an inline heater or inline C02 diffuser.

I measured the flow by filling a 1litre measuring jug and timing how long it took.
I filled it at the same height as my tank to allow for head.:)

Eheim 2078 measured with bucket and stop watch at tank height at 1100lph in good agreement with manufacturers data for a fully loaded filter. I was using the Eheim recommended loads per basket.

Thanks Jim,

Anyone else care to add to this thread, trying to colate infomation on filters and their flow rate, this would help when people purchase filters in the future.

Thanks :)

I've got no hard numbers but I do recall the "general" rule with canisters. Most/all filters are rated w/o media. Most canisters you can assume half the rated flow once you fill them with their usual media. Eheim tended to be a bit better at 70ish% or so. Whether that was due to the cannister design/pump or just due to the Eheim media I have no idea. Clogging of course cuts all these numbers down dramatically.

It may be at this point that more of the manufacturers are starting to be a little more "realistic", shall we say, with regards to flow rates? If that's the case then the general rule of thumb no longer applies.

Thats why i thought this would be a good topic to start, if people take time to check thier flow rate and put the stats up here, we could then convert the results into a graph with the most popular filter, media combinations and flowrate. :)

the flow may in fact be higher than reported using your methodology. many canister filters are closed loops.

This is true, it may do 1500000000LPH!!!!!!

But at the end of the day if it can only fill a 600 litre container in 1 hour it can only have a flow rate of 600LPH.

It may be on the crude side, but unless everyone has a flow meter lying around the house it will have to do.

Any way what type of filter are you using and what is your flow rate compared to manufactures spec.:D

Eheim 2217, small pumice media only (size between 5-7 mm), no fine pad.

The filter media has just been cleaned before measuring.

310 LPH after CO2 reactor.
486 LPH without CO2 reactor.
