Emergent Plant Types (recommendations/experience)

I've toyed with the idea of incorporating some emergent plant types since removing my canopy top and installing a hanging light fixture. My understanding is that tanks setup this way are healthier and in my case, with an open acrylic top, perhaps more esthetically pleasing to see flowers hiding the filter and misc. tubes etc.

I'm wondering if it is feasible to add such plant types in the rear of the tank, say the upper 1/3 and what types are the most prolific and appealing?
