the pantanal became much smaller since I added some osmocoat + clay into the substrate, then I read from APC that Pantanal prefers acidic substrate, made me wonder if that was the cause.

I just bought jug of Osmocote Plus and was going to use then read the label and it has .05% copper--will this hurt Red Cherry Shrimp?

No, this is not true in the least.

Hi,

Osmocote Plus in the substrate has not harmed my inbred shrimp.:gw

Most micronutrient blends include higher doses of copper.

If you need smaller cubes an old frozen bloodworm cube tray can do the trick. No problem getting them out either.

Some Gets Into The Water Colunm, But Not Nearly Enough

Hi Jason,

No, the Osmocote is mainly for enriching the substrate, mainly for the benefit of the root feeders, most aquatic plants take in some or all of their nutrients via the water column. :)

Many Ways To Skin the Proverbial Cat

Hi Jason,

I have not specifically looked at how much Osmocote leaches into the water column; my experience with enriched substrates is that they do provide some nutrients, primarily in the form of ammonium, NH[SUB]4[/SUB], the ionized form of ammonia. :)

If your plants are primary root feeders and/or the tank is lightly planted you might well get away with it. :)

Though it can cause some other problems, cutting back on biological filtration, increasing (slight over feeding), increasing critters can all help provide nutrients for your plants.:)

Within a few day, PO4 rose from 0.5 to 5 PPM, using Osmocote Plus 16-8-12, 5 grams per square foot.
My plain gravel (around 1-2 mm in diameter) couldn't hold it from leaching.
But no algae problem apart from a few days of GDA on glass.

after using Osmocote, do you still use liquid fertilizer?

Osmocote plus doesn't contain PO4? is your PO4 DIY?

Osmocote Plus here contains PO4 (it's 16-8-12).
http://sotus.co.th/product_detail_osmocote16-8-12+2.html
Are you still interested?

Before using Osmocote Plus I had been dosing PO4 via EI method using KH2PO4.
Then after using it, PO4 climbed to the level I didn't like, so I stopped KH2PO4,
but continued dosing others (KNO3, Trace Elements, etc.).

I'm not sure, but it's probably different from the ones you see in US market.
But the ratio is close (16-8-12 vs 15-9-12).

There are different formulas of Osmocote Plus sold in different regions.

Not right now. It tends to come out on the surface when I rescape or replant.
And I saw other tanks doing very well with just water column dosing and inert substrate.
So now I'm doing water column dosing only.
