I just replaced my SGT 500 "D" gauges with brand new USG OEM SGT 500 "B" gauges.
I took it for a test run, and it's working perfectly!
    So, no problems replacing gauges.

Here are some pics of the new gauges installed, during my pressure check:

This is the last time you'll see my relief valve on this regulator. The thing with the blue cap will be removed and replaced with a hex plug.

I just purchased my first Matheson model 8-580 regulator. It has "C" gauges.
Please confirm that I need a 1/2" 27 thread CGA-320 nipple instead of the standard 1/4 npt...
I have heard that Matheson Model 8 regulators use a 1/2" 27 thread on their input port as opposed to most other manufacturers (i.e. Victor) who use a 1/4" npt.

    Western Enterprises Part number: CO-7.

    Please confirm.

That is correct. I would wait till I get the regulator and remove the 580 nipple to be doubly sure.

I guess it's obvious when you have a 1/4" NPT nipple with the 1/2" 27 threaded nipple side-by-side.
You have any pictures by chance?

Do all Matheson Model 8s have the different threads?

    Thanks for your help!!! :)

    Here is a pic of a 1/4" NPT and a 1/2"-27

I am 99% sure that all Matheson Model 8 regulators have 1/2"-27 thread on the input port. ;)

Thanks so much for the visual!!! Yes, that is quite a difference, fine thread versus coarse 1/4 npt thread.

I spoke with Jim and he said that Harris typically made regulators for Matheson and that they used the 1/2" 27 FT for the CGA inllet port.

The CGA 320 FT nut/nipple is $19. I'll prob buy one and a regular CGA 320 nut/nipple for $8 at the same time.

    You're welcome.

$19! Ouch! I bought the nipples separate and they cost me $9 at my Airgas dealer after their markup (they special ordered them for me and had to bring in 10 minimum, they prolly still have the 8 that I didn't buy).

If you want to save a few bucks I can send you the spare CO-7 nipple I have at cost + first class postage, I don't need it as I sold the Matheson Model 8 regulator I had.

Thanks for the offer. I think the nipple I bought (from regulatortorchrepair.com) has a built in filter and it comes with the nut and washer, etc. I'm not worried. I bought a couple sets of CGA stems/nuts, too. They are the only place I know of that has 3" stems/nipples online.

Just a quick update. I spent a few days traveling to get home for the holidays and had a chance to check out the parts I got.

    Here is the regulator:

I posted that I would let you guys know how the McMaster-Carr precision needle valve worked out. A picture is worth a thousand words....

Nice regulator, and congrats on the Ideal Valve, you'll love it!

FYI, some of the Ideal Valves have been shipped with loose handles, micormeters, and knobs. This is easily adjusted:

I'll post a thread later on how to do this with my stainless V54-1-12 (same design as the V52-1-12).

Heads up ladies and gentlemen. If you like Matheson model 8 regulators, eight more are comming up for auction soon from this seller: http://myworld.ebay.com/oemwholesalewh/

I bought the best of the lot for $44 plus shipping. He has plenty in like new condition. These were from a decomissioned pharma manufacturing plant. they are all in great shape and range from $24-$40 .

See pic above of mine. Good seller.

Won this on Ebay and just got in UPS today. Any issues with removing the output stem and valve?

I don't see the need for them. I've already got a CGA-320 stem and nut to replace the input.

    Thanks

    Jim

You are very welcome, Jim. Most of the time, they have some sort of oddball thread size which makes them worthless to me anyway.
