Here is a very similar design.

The placement for the check valve is a little further forward on this design but I don't know if that maters. I also like, the return strainer ruddybop uses instead wire ties. Running a line from the overflow to a return pump with a venturi fitting was my thought too.

The wire mesh they use for moss etc, stain steel etc, you can simply cut that and bend it to make the over flow screen, I do that to keep shrimp out of filters on some tanks etc.

Here is how ruddybop cuts the caps. I think a handsaw would also work but the method he uses to hold the cap in place keeps it steady during the cutting. I would add some over flow screen or a pre-filter to the design.

    Your setup?

    Tom,

I have read where you use sumps on many of your large tanks....I am in the process of setting up a 55gl low tech non co2 planted angelfish tank with a 30 gal sump....
Should I use one of these for the overflow to the sump with the input in the sump below its water line to preserve my co2???

In the non CO2 tank, you want to have degassing at a high rate. This keeps the CO2 at a more constant ppm, but it's low, 1-2 ppm typically.
