Detritus build-up

Does detritus build-up in the tank cause black algae to grow on plant leaves? In Reef tanks, good water flow is essential to move detritus around and up to the overflow. Is this good for a planted tank?

I'd not go so far as to say it causes algae, but can be a source for NH4.
As far as flow, more flow = less algae as a rule.
