Thanks Jason, Let's see if I'm able to handle it ;)

I absolutely love Bucephalandras by their shapes, their colors, stunning plants indeed, lets see how they thrive in this layout :)

I've used this kind of device on the past (Twinstar) and can say that in fact it helps, but you can follow my Journal and judge by yourself, I'm now using CHIHIROS DOCTOR II as I'm testing some of their products to the Portugal/Spain distributor, as you can see my lights are also from CHIHIROS A-Series, will test other products in the future in a nice brand with awesome products, and not very expensive ...

Here goes a little update with a little more than a week of life ;)

Plants are filling quite nicelly, and started the fertilization with half the daily dose of a full EI regime, I'm almost certain that this setup will not need more than that, let's see as it feels in ...

The cleaning team is most certain to enter this week to help with some of the HC melting a crew of 20/30 Amanos will certanily do the job ...

Here goes a photo were you can see that a lot has grown in this past week :D

How often does the C.Doctor II run and for how long?

I'm seeing a lot of these small water splitting (electrolysis) units in tanks. Any one know how much they increase oxygen by? Does it get O2 past saturation? Couldn't I hook up a auto-doser with some peroxide and achieve the same thing?

I'm all for increasing O2 in tanks. But it is hard to improve on healthy plant growth for fighting algae. Selling them as algae cures seems optimistic.

    Hi jbs47,

Don´t have a strict answer to you, I can say that it has an intern algorithm that at times it makes electrolysis with periods of +/- 5 to 5 min working for about +/-30 seconds to 1 minute, and it stays for about +/-30 minutes without doing electrolysis ... I've never took the time to stay looking and annotating the timings ...

    Hi there Pikez,

I'm also all for having good dissolved O2 in water column, that's why my skimmer is always turned on and most important this helps the pH to stabilize at a given CO2 intake and this means stable CO2 level as well ...

As for the CHIHIROS DOCTOR itself, I guess it wont get O2 past saturation, but I think that dosing peroxide in water column will lead to other problems, I used it locally in the past to kill some BBA, and the near plants melted quite heavily, so I guess using it in a peristaltic pump is not a good idea, if it melts the plants imagine what it will do to fish gills :(

But you also can use a SÖCHTING OXYDATOR with Peroxide, is a good addition to heavily stocked fish tanks, and it will for shore increase the diluted O2 in water column ...

Continuing with my opinion about TWINSTAR/CHIHIROS I think that they are a great addition to any kind of aquarium, I remember when I was a kid, my uncle had an electrolysis device mounted on the kitchen wall to purify the company water making it safer for human consumption, i think the same principle applies to aquarium water, this will for shore kill pathogens and free algae spores on the aquarium water column it's not a miracle device but it plays it's roll in the aquarium maintenance, so you can discard a UV light filter, strangulating your filter output by using one of those, you will have pathogen free environment for your fish and critters, and for sure the dissolved O2 will be higher, and it also activates positive ions (Na+, CA+2, Fe+2, Mg+2, K+, Zn+2), making them easily available for aquatic plants proof of that it depending on the mesh the device uses you can see deposits on this same meshes, we see this very often in DIY devices with stainless steel meshes...

I recommend this kind of device to any one, and you can judge by yourself, maybe someone with a good O2 meter can test it, and see if this is really relevant or not, it will be good to have some data about that ;)

I will leave a link to a video done by Ricardo Romão Twinstar Iberica (Portugal/Spain) distributor that I know personally, it's in Portuguese but it has English Subtitles, it gives you an idea about what this kind of device is meant to do:

I'm not publicizing this be no means, as you can see I'm using other brand, but I see similar results in my tanks ...

As I said before this is not a miracle device that eliminates all of your algae but it helps getting them on check ... Has almost everything in life we have to maintain the discipline to reach our goals, the same applies to our aquariums, and I think the secret for the success in our hobby is kipping a good disciplined maintenance, and let nature take it's course, timed water changes, good fertilization regime, optimized CO2 intake, and good pruning it's half way there :)

    Best regards, Nuno Matos

Thank you, Nuno, for the info. The tips above will get you 95% there. :) As with everything else, the harder you work, the luckier you get.

One month after starting this scape it's going strong :)

It has destabilized a bit from the last trimming, the PO4 went to zero, and left some margin for GSA to take a grip on the hardscape, the dosing was adjusted today with 2 new bottles of macro and micro, let's see what happens [IMG]
