I'm trying to get my hands on calcium chloride locally since shipping is so expensive here, but I'm not sure where to look. Who sells this stuff and what is it used for? I know that it is sometimes sold as ice remover but I'm not sure of the purity of that stuff.

Most any pool supply place sells it.
Calcium hardness increaser.

CaSO4, fine ground gypsum is also available all over the place, most ag places sell ti and most places that sell ferts etc will have it.

Thanks, I'll try the CaSO4 route. Pools are not really common here...we get one month of summer if that. :)

Not too far north, actually. Just right out in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean. :) Well not actually in the middle. Closer to the left side. Winters don't get all that cold (usually a few degrees below freezing most of the time) but they are long.
