What is the brown growth on this driftwood?

I think this has been answered before but I couldn't seem to find it anywhere.

I put in a new piece of driftwood and around the same time that I had some low CO2 problems.

On the driftwood and moving to the substrate and plants is this brown fuzz growth. Is this algae or is it some other type of growth coming from the driftwood?

Re: Brown growth on driftwood

It's an alga, might even be a BGA, Phormidium which is not often seen in plant tanks, either that or filamentous diatoms or a green with diatoms covering it.

Take the wood out and scrub good.

While I'm scrubing the wood, would it be ok to spray it down with a diluted bleach solution or do you think it would soak up into the wood to much?
