Well,

I've had hair algae for a while now, at least 2 months. The weird thing is, that it only flourishes in and around my HC, nothing else is being attacked by it. Last week I was on spring break for 8 days, reducing my lighting to 6 or 5 hours (cant remember), no dosing, and co2 on for the lighting period. When I came back, the hair algae was significantly reduced, but not gone. Now a week later it is back full force after setting the lighting period to 10 hours, dosing EI, and Co2 for the duration of the lighting period. What is the best way to totally eradicate the hair algae?

thanks

Try removing all light for 72 hours. I mean all light. Seal the tank with cardboard on all sides and the top. Leave a small space for air exchange. This will kill the hair algae.

You can use Excel and do a daily water change of 50-60% + the 3 day blackout, add Amano shrimp, clean and prune it out and then make sure you have good CO2/dosing thereafter.

thanks, I'll be sure to do that after my plants have fully recovered from my absents over spring break. I should be getting Amano shrimp today or tomorrow.
