Well, it's California, that whole state is absurd. And I can say that because I lived there for 19 years. And there are specific reasons why I don't anymore.

I have a hard time believing this is a majority opinion, unfortunately the squeaky wheels are the loudest and get the most attention.

I think ordinances or requirements or guidelines to stores that sell the animals to provide proper education about the care and requirements of the animals is reasonable. You will never, however, be able to legislate away the idiots. Only idiots try that.

I enjoy it when people try to make an argument by using extremes to make their point. "first goldfish are killed, whats next? humans? where do you draw the line?" paraphrased of course. I KNOW! you draw the line at humans!

Its unfortunate that animals suffer from incapable owners, but that happens to every type of animal kept by humans. Not everyone makes a good owner and those people are individually held responsible for animal cruelty, everyone in the city is not banned from keeping an animal because one idiot can't manage it.

They should also note the "nature" is not that kind.

I cannot possibly see them enforcing this in China town.
Laws have little meaning unless they can be enforced.

I do agree with them however, that fish should be included with animal welfare.
How many have aquarist killed due to neglect? Same is true for cats, dogs and small animals.

    Better education etc is required.

I'm not sure laws that are more common sense mandated........are the answer.......
    Fish License?

    It may be the future.

Impulse buys are good and bad, good if they step up to the plate and get involved, bad.... if not.

The folks will simply go to other towns in SF bay to get things.

Thats messed up. I hate the bans on weeds but this is annoying. I understand the thinking behind it though. If you're going to get something you need to be responsible. Sure people get tired of keeping the same fish after a while but no need to toss it. Find it a home. My GF wanted to get rid of her monster fish. She had a nice clown knife, bichir, some pacus, cudas, etc. She wanted to get rid of them so I suggested she post a thread on one of the forums she's a member of. People blew her phone up wanting them. She wasn't even selling them, just wanted them out of the tank so she could do something else with it.

Wanna see some whiners complaining about fish bans are that are about 98% guilty of cruelty??

Go to Monster fishkeeper's, perhaps 2% of them have adequate sized housing for their livestock.

    I can keep a puppy inside a 3x 6 ft cage too.
Does it mean it's the right thing to do?

    Ask animal welfare.
Their answer is the same for a similar sized fish kepts in a similar sized area.

I will say that on my latest visits to the major pet store chains, that when I ask to buy a fish, they in turn, will ask me how large is the tank and how long has it been established. I don't know if they would deny my a sale if I answer the questions incorrectly, but at least they are seemingly trying to make a positive approach to proper fish care. Or they just hate seeing fish come back dead and having to replace them with that 14 day promise they have.

Well, they got a conversation started.

Most fish are purchased as impulse buys with Mom buying whatever color of fish that Junior fancies at the moment. As soon as Junior tires and the tank starts smelling, the fish get flushed. Mom chalks it up as a "lesson of responsibility" and sagely uses the experience to counter later appeals for a dog.

In Asia, fish are filleted alive, served still twitching to be dipped in wasabi-spiked sauces. World wide, fish are skewed though their gills and dragged along on strings though the water until their tormentor decides to quit fishing for the day.

And many LFS are gulags for fish, with filthy conditions, grotesquely inbred stock, and tatooed fish. Etc, etc.

So when one really thinks about it, these people have a point. I don't agree with them, but just sayin'.
