I like the large lava section on the far side. Wabi kusa sure made planting easier.

WOW! I can't wait for them to open this up and some more pictures to trickle out to the net.

I wonder what they are using for Co2, a railroad tanker car?

Actually once you get to the larger sizes, degassing is less an issue. They use low light and low light plants mostly.

Do they have lower levels of CO2? Or just make a non-co2 tank?

No, the volume is less than say 10X turnover per hour, the over flow suggest maybe 10-20,000 gal/hr. There is a lot of open space. That will change though. I hope they take care of the tank though. It will require a lot more labor than most public aquariums typically allocate for on going care for similar sized tanks.

I hope so too! upkeep will be quite the challenge for them! I wonder what instruction / training Amano will leave with staff there. Unlike their large aquariums in Japan, ADA staff would not be readily available to look after it.

Some of the Lisbon Oceanic Aquarium staff flew to ADA in Japan to learn planting, pruning, and general plant maintenance from Amano. Let's hope they learned well. Otherwise, imagine all the algae in such an uber-large aquarium.

Is the implication here that less flow means less surface agatation, splashing and degassing?

I would think that because of the depth the ratio of surface area to total tank volume is much lower than anything we would normally deal with which would mean proportionally less Co2 would be lost to gas exchange.

    Some more info on this.

The centerpiece of this exhibition is the world’s largest nature aquarium created by Takashi Amano. It measures about 132 feet (40 meters) long and has about 42,000 gallons (160,000 liters) of fresh water.

    The aquarium’s layout includes:

    4 tons of sand,

25 tons of volcanic rocks from Azores,

78 tree trunks from Scotland and Malaysia,

40 species of tropical freshwater fish,

46 species of aquatic plants with over 70,000 in total!

Could you imagine what it would be like to trim the plants in this tank? Talk about a weekend project! Very cool build!
