24/7 U.V. sterilization?

I'm just wondering how necessary it is. I have a 20G and a 29G, both have U.V. sterilizers inline with the canister filters. The bulb has been out on the 29G for the last 6 months and the last few weeks the 20G unit has been off as well. No problems so far and I could certainly do without the head loss. Any reason I wouldn't want to take them off? I'd just put them back on a separate loop in the event of a green water attack.

Hi,

There seems to be no need for 24/7 uv.

If you can plumb it so you can use as needed, that is optimal and increases the bulb life.

Also, will increase your flow a bit due to reduced head as you noted.
