Have you tried adding other types of fish? bigger but peaceful. I find that my neons (not cardinals I know) will school with other fish around, otherwise they think they own the tank and act like it.

Re: Bunch O cardinals

Bigger tanks and larger schools.
There are 500 fish or so.
They school well alone even with other fish(there are many Rummy noses) such as hatchets, pencils, cories, emperor tetras etc.

Small tanks do not allow for many smaller schooling fish the room to school well, they are confined. If you try more open scapes, you can have better luck as this provides more open space.

Re: Bunch O cardinals

A few weeks ago I added 25 neon tetras to my 180gal tank with some platies and algae eaters, and it is an awesome sight to watch them in a tight school. I've had neons before in 10gal and 55gal tanks and never saw them school like they do in the 180gal tank.

I have read that they school better in larger tanks, but nobody really said why this is true. If I had to guess I would say that in a 10 gal tank they never feel like they are very far apart, and maybe its possible they will see their reflection more in a smaller tank and are tricked into thinking they are in a group when they are not.

Now at feeding time that is a different story, then it is every fish for himself and the school scatters until the food is gone and things settle down again then the school regroups.

Re: Bunch O cardinals

Fish feel cramped and they do not behave right in such conditions.

It's really that simple, big schools=> big tank.

Do not expect them to behave in a school when there's not enough room to school.
