Notice the shorter plants, more open designs from the jungles prior. A Common theme among many.

Yeah, the shorter plants in 2014 weren't on purpose. It was just a lack of me taking care proper care of the tank (baby in the house). I really wanted a nice red background with the L. Red and Pink Ovalis but it didn't work out how I envisioned in my head. The Bacopa Japan also kept floating on me unless I had it trimmed way down. It had great color but was a pain to manage. The 2013 tank I liked the most but I think it had too much at times and I could have had better lines/groupings. So I'm hoping the past two years experience really pays off in 2015.

I think I have a better grasp on things this year but we'll see.I know I have 2-3 extra plants in the tank and will take them out once I see what grows well and looks good together. I think the hygrophila should be shorter once its converts to the submersed form but its my first time growing it so not positive. My plan is too mix it with the ammania seng. and the PP since they have the same basic leave shape but should be different colors (shades). All of this is probably a month or two away. I just like documenting everything so I can look back and see how far I've come.

Overall I'm happy with the growth so far. I really like the left side of the tank but not a huge fan of the right yet. I might switch out a couple plants in a month or so.

My battle against the snails is going well. I added 8 Yo-Yo's and 30 cardinals last week. They were really causing issues with their eggs/slime on the plants.

Here is a cell phone picture from tonight. Sorry for the reflection but its a hassle for me to hang a drape to stop the reflection in the room. Everything is filling in nicely.

I'm thinking about flipping one of the pieces of wood to the other side...What do you guys think? I think it would let me do better rows and layouts.

Maybe it's just the picture, but from here the back piece of wood is almost an afterthought. I think it would be very good to rearrange them somehow. Also you may want to consider not putting them so close to the end of the tank....ie golden ratio and all that. Just a thought. Looking very nice otherwise.

It looks good. The wood placement could be better with respect to the ratio, if that's what you want your focus on. Right now the focus is at the "root base" of the wood. Make everything tie into this area and it will look great. If grow all your stems tall and full on the left and have the tops slightly shorter down to that area it will work well. Maybe a big carpet spilling from the roots with some HC. Just the way you have it will look good when it fills in, as you grow nice plants well. If you leave the wood there I would at least add some substrate around it or push it a little further in the substrate. Can we get a side shot looking up the hill to the wood?

Yeah, I agree with pretty much everything you said. I think I'm going to change it this week(end). I can't take a picture from the side sump/wall in the way. I also need to pick up a couple midgrou plants like Tom previously mentioned.

I got a bunch of new wood from Tom a few weeks back. I just need to make time to scape. I've got a plan laid out on the floor already but need to fit it in the tank. I traded in all my fish two weekends ago so the tank is empty except AS. After Monday, I am off work until the new year so hope to work on it then but got a few higher priority projects around the house to do first. I also want to strip the black paint off the back and switch to a whitish color.

Here is a picture of all the wood and stone (bottom of blue container, 100lbs of Seiryu)

I finally got all the plants I needed last week and planted the tank. Needs a few months to grow out but I think it's a good start. The background lights aren't on for these cell phone pictures. I got a list of things to do with the aquarium over the next few weeks. I hope to get back to more regular updates.

There are 7 pieces of wood in the scape.

I described the type of pieces I wanted and told Tom my budget. Tom showed me some pics and I picked from those. He also threw in some extra pieces. I have a couple large bins full off wood from Tom from over the years....think 4 or 5 large orders. I used a few older unused pieces in this scape as well.
