No, you do't need the carbon perse. You might want to save it for the time you have to remove some medicine from the tank.

Ok great. Can this carbon bag be reused? It's about 3 months old?

Am I correct that I would benefit the most from extra biomedia? It's my understanding that the foam just filters big stuff out of the water?

Also foam will function as biomedia, provided it stays in there long enough. Some biomedia might be beneficial to sustain a good bacteriaxulture in your filter.

The filter came with a foam block, a carbon bag, and a bag of biomedia. So it sounds like the preference here would be to replace the carbon with another sponge instead of adding more of the bio pellets. Is this correct?
